This is a lesson plan which was used during a recent inspection with a group of Year 9 students while studying Great Expectations (both play and novel). The main task here was to analyse Dickens’ portrayal of Fagin from an extract from the novel. This allowed students to have empathy for Fagin in comparison to their original view of him via his appearance and how he is described by Dickens. This has been edited so that it gives room for you to add student information. Available as part as a whole bundle where the PowerPoints and materials are given.

This resource is used after a mock examination to make students more reflective on what area’s of improvement they need to study. The booklet is 10 pages in total and asks students to rate their confidence in each question out of 10. It then ask a series of questions to make students reflect on their mock and how to improve. Students then rate each Non Fiction text, Section B Text Types and Topics before writing a “To Do List” which promotes independent study. I have used this with both of my Year 10 and Year 11 students after their mock examinations and they found it very beneficial. Exam: IGCSE Pearson EDEXCEL English Language A

This is a full lesson from which I was observed by an inspector. This is a Non-Fiction lesson whereby students have to think about their own lives with the main question being “Who Are You?” This lesson brought a lot of thought provoking questions to students and much intrigue. This is aimed at Year 9 students as they are about to transition into KS3 and it is linked to the ‘Growing Up’ section in their textbooks. This lesson was for a Year 9 class but can be used for any KS3 class for students to think about their future. The lesson is cross-curricular as it asks students to think of their Option Choices for Year 10 and what job they would like to do in the future. This lesson is after another lesson entitled “Who are You?” and is available too as a bundle. The main task is a small article with a comprehension in relation the the question: What would you like to do when you grow up? A PowerPoint resource for the poem Dulce et Decorum est by Wilfred Owen. It starts with a small bio to uncover the context of the poem. The poem is broken into smaller stanzas so the students can engage with the poem. Many key words are underlined and a description of the poems meaning given. Questions are posed to promote class discussion.

This presentation concern the use of the internet within media studies. This presentation gives the advantages and disadvantages of the internet. It also gives students the opportunity to work in pairs and individually.

A presentation I used for my students to plan a question from the 2009 Leaving Certificate examination. The emphasis is on the students to plan their own answer to the question after being prompted by certain themes and Q&A discussion within the class.

This PowerPoint and remote learning instructions introduces Haikus in a simple way. It is for remote learning during the lockdown. The ‘Do Now’ exercise tests students’ prior knowledge on syllables as this is required. It then shows students an example of a Haiku, going through the structure and language. Students are then asked to watch a YouTube video for the process and then asked to create their own Haiku. The plenary is to create their own ‘Lockdown Haiku’ which can be emailed to you and the chosen winners will be on a format like Padlet.

This lesson introduces George as a character in Of Mice and Men. Similar to the character of Lennie, we focus on how Steinbeck uses language to describe George. This is done through dual coding, reading and discussion throughout the lesson. The lesson is structured in such a way whereby students start with a ‘Do Now’ and have an opportunity to give their points across through classroom discussion and think-pair-share. This lesson follows on from the previous lesson where students found what others in the bunk house said about Curley’s Wife. In this lesson we are introduced to her and this gives the students an opportunity to decide their own first impression of Curley’s Wife. This is a PowerPoint that I made for an observation. It has several different tasks including a differentiated ‘Think-Pair-Share’ task. It also has a modelled PEEL paragraph for the students to observe before they try their own PEEL paragraph while following each step.

This PowerPoint introduces students to the context behind the poem wounds and also the poet. The students complete a ‘Do Now’ and then assess their prior knowledge of Northern Ireland which then leads into discussion. They are given a background to the poet before observing the poem after completing a mini task relating to the title. There is also a YouTube video relating to Bloody Sunday which gives students a visual before completing a task on their first impressions of the poem. This is the first lesson from two where the poem will be analysed in detail-language and structure. *NB: To make this more student friendly, the comment on the Pope was removed-this can be changed at your own discretion.

This PowerPoint is structured with a ‘Do Now’ which recalls students prior knowledge from poetic devices and other questions. It then gives background to the poet before getting students to think about the title and context. The students are then asked to write what the main themes of the poem are. There is a hinge question which leads to a debate as all answers are similar but have minor differences to show what a dramatic monologue is.

This is a detailed scheme of work (over 40 pages) that I created as part of our new scheme of work for the upcoming academic year. The SOW places emphasis on the students’ prior learning before this unit and this is mentioned in detail at the start. Each of the 24 lessons have a similar structure and can be easily followed. The lessons for this scheme of work can also be found in my shop and are also part of a bundle.
